Although the weather has been running hot and cold (tsundere anthropogenic climate change) lately, Spring is just around the corner. With both convention season and a new season of anime upon us, here are my top picks for what lies ahead.
Unlimited Sequel Works
The most noticeable thing about the Spring 2017 anime season's offerings is that it's packed with sequels. Nearly 1 in 4 titles are a sequel this season, so for the sake of brevity, I've listed some of the most anticipated ones below.
- Boku no Hero Academia 2 / My Hero Academia 2
- Natsume Yuujinchou Roku / Natsume's Book of Friends 6
- Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata ♭ / Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend ♭
- Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul / Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul
- Shingeki no Kyojin 2 / Attack on Titan 2
Fantasy
Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho follows a witch named Zero and her half-man, half-beast bodyguard as they search for a stolen grimoire with the power to bring the world to its knees. Being based on a series of award winning light novels, with animation by White Fox, it's a safe bet to say Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho is something to look forward to.
Work Life
Although P.A. Works is putting out two titles this season, Sakura Quest is the one I'm anticipating most. If you enjoyed, Shirobako, this series is likely to follow in the same spirit. Sakura Quest follows 5 girls who work for the tourism bureau of a rural town as they grow in to their professional roles.
Ecchi
Alright you pervs, here's what you came for. This season's dose of fanservice may just send you to hell. sin Nanatsu no Taizai is the story of how fallen archangel Lucifer teams up with a human and Leviathan in order to defeat The Sins Deadly Sins, a group of demon king rulers. Judging from the character designs alone, this series could easily be described as sinful.
Hate Watch
Sometimes to appreciate good anime, you need to go through the schlock-factory known as light novel adaptations. Eromanga Sensei is the latest entry in Tsukasa Fushimi's repertoire of imouto-loving, self-insertion fantasies. If you have fond traumatic memories of OreImo, you may "enjoy" this title .
Music
No seasonal watch list would be complete without a music series. If you were left disappointed by Fuuka last season, you can place your bets on Fukumenkei Noise / The Anonymous Noise. This is a story of unrequited love between childhood friends and how music reunites them after all these years.
Soundtrack
Re:CREATORS is the newest title from Troyca, the studio that brought us Aldnoah Zero. While details about it are scarce, we know it's got Mechas and more importantly Hiroyuki Sawano is composing the soundtrack. That alone is enough to earn a mention from me.
Compressing a 49 series season in to 7 categories was quite tough. There were several things that deserved a mention had to be cut. If you want to hear more about those, drop a comment below!
