Temperatures are rising and that can only mean one thing. The Summer Anime Season is upon us! If you're looking for a good way to beat the heat, skip the beach and stay indoors with my top picks.

A Blast from the Past

If all of the sequels of last season weren't nostalgic enough for you, this season has you covered. Mahoujin Guru Guru is finally back after a 17 year absence. The series is based on a gag manga that parodies old-school turn-based RPGs (think the first couple Final Fanatasy or Dragon Quest games). It was first adapted in to an anime in 1994, making it like an OG KonoSuba.

Sequels

If you were really looking forward to some more sequels though, this season still delivers. Below is an abridged list of some of the more notable sequels. (Shout out to the Hell Girl fans who've waited 9 years for the 4th season!)

  • Jigoku Shoujo: Yoi no Togi / Hell Girl: Yoi no Togi
  • New Game!!
  • Owarimonogatri (Ge)

Sports

Every season has its fair share of sport series. However, this season something extraordinary has come along. Ballroom e Youkoso (Welcome to the Ballroom) takes to the dance floor in an exploration of the passionate world of competitive ballroom dancing.

Shorts

It isn't summer without shorts! No… not the kind you wear, I mean animated shorts. With a wide array of options ranging from dank memes to lesbian NTR, one series stand above the rest. Skirt no Naka wa Kedamono Deshita follows Shizuka who meets Ryou, an older college girl, at a mixer. The two instantly befriend each other and Shizuka decides to spend the night at Ryou's place. Little does she know that, Ryou isn't actually a girl.

WTF

If you're looking for a series that will have you questioning your faith in humanity, look no further than Centaru no Nayami. This series is about a highschool for supernatural creature girls... with a centaur protagonist. There really isn't much more I can say about this.

Fantasy / Adventure

The assassination of a an imperial minister sets teh backdrop for two enemy empires to showdown. Shoukoku no Altair is both a work of historical fiction and a shounen series set in the Ottoman Empire. Viewers are in for a treat, because this series is being animated by MAPPA.

Romance

If real life isn't dystopian enough for you, Koi to Uso (Love and Lies) is a high school romance set in a world where both love and lies are outlawed. At age 16, everyone is assigned a marriage partner by the government. However, our below average protagonist Yukari Nejima has to reconcile his romantic feelings with the law of the land.

The abundance of anime each season is making narrowing recommendations down to 7 categories more and more difficult. If you feel I've left anything out, drop a comment below or reach out to me via Twitter at @HelpMeHekuta.
