For the last few months I've been working closely with the team at Hen Tie Cake (HTC) on a new project. Today I'd like to take a moment to share the results of that with everyone.
I'M GOING BACK TO JAPAN as a Production Assistant on photography project and all it cost me was my soul!!!
(Actually that might make a good light novel title…)
For those who don't know, I'm a member of a group of anime convention panelists called Hen Tie Cake. We travel up and down the East Coast, talking about anime and other weeb things at conventions like Katsucon and Otakon. Something that has been bothering me lately is how our brand is becoming diluted, due to an expansion in to other areas of anime convention culture. The biggest offender in particular is one of the co-founders, Sweets, who has been pursuing a cosplay photography business model for almost a year now. While cosplay photography is working out well for him, I want to keep HTC on message as a group of panelists.
That's where Suit Up! Japan comes in!
Because of Sweets' ambitious nature, he came up with a radical idea. He wanted to put out a cosplay calendar set at a Japanese hot spring. My first reaction was to dismiss the idea as both ridiculous and unprofitable, but that didn't deter him. Once he had generated enough buzz for me to be unable to ignore it, I decided I'd lend my skills to this wild project in order to finally separate the cosplay from the HTC.
So welcome to my production notes! This is the preface to my misadventures as a production assistant and the many nights of lost sleep that lie ahead.
If you're interested in the calendar project itself, you can follow it instead of me on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or Kickstarter
