Normally I don't wrap up seasonal anime with a blog post but with a new decade on the horizon, everyone is in a retrospective mood. As such there are a number of (mostly naive) "Anime of the Decade" lists going around. While I'm not yet the authority on good anime, I'll indulge the trend and provide some of my top picks for both this season, this year and finally the last decade. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish this post in time for the New Year, so I took to twitter to summarize some of my thoughts. Let's have a look!

TV Anime of the Fall 2019 Season

When I first recommended Hoshiai no Sora / Stars Align I warned that it may look like a sports anime of the surface but had the potential for unfathomable depth. Having completed it, I can now state with confidence that the series is truly something special. Unfortunately, it didn't make it to my anime of the decade list because it's currently incomplete.

Note: I somehow forgot Puella Magi Madoka Magica which is one of my favorite titles ever as well as one of the most important magical girl series of the decade.

Anime Film of the Decade

Your Name is not only the highest grossing Japanese film and the highest grossing anime film of all time, but is also an integral part of the reason why the US market now has serious theatrical releases for anime films. (There's an interesting story about why the film's theatrical release was delayed in the US involving corporate monopolies and gutless executives but that story is for another time.) Cultural impact aside, the film features goregeous backgrounds, a moving soundtrack, and the wildest plot twist I've seen in some time. I can't recommend it any more highly.
